    Ever since I seen Joerg make the Howitzer out of a large y fork, I have been gathering large y forks and whittling them down in hopes of creating very strong, very nice/ beautiful one of a kind slingshots... well here is my Howitzer,<br><br>Tell me what you think <img src="http://illiweb.com/fa/i/smiles/icon_biggrin.png" alt="Very Happy" longdesc="1"><br><br><img src="http://img805.imageshack.us/img805/8006/img2011101600130.jpg" border="0" alt=""><br>By <a href="http://profile.imageshack.us/user/ryanwigglesworth" class="postlink" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">ryanwigglesworth</a> at 2011-10-16<br><img src="http://img851.imageshack.us/img851/6075/img2011101600131.jpg" border="0" alt=""><br>By <a href="http://profile.imageshack.us/user/ryanwigglesworth" class="postlink" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">ryanwigglesworth</a> at 2011-10-16<br><br>By <a href="http://profile.imageshack.us/user/ryanwigglesworth" class="postlink" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">ryanwigglesworth</a> at 2011-10-16<br><img src="http://img406.imageshack.us/img406/6397/img2011101600133.jpg" border="0" alt=""><br>By <a href="http://profile.imageshack.us/user/ryanwigglesworth" class="postlink" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">ryanwigglesworth</a> at 2011-10-16<br><br><br><br><br>edit- This is the finished product... Wish me luck!

Yeah, we have 3 of them, and they seem to make an appearance as soon as the camera comes out lol!<br><br>Cats and Catapults <img src="http://illiweb.com/fa/i/smiles/icon_biggrin.png" alt="Very Happy" longdesc="1"><br><br>I threw some single layer silver on this howitzer, I really like the hand position, gives a lot more power with the finger grips, may have to hook this bad boy up for full butterfly and see how it goes!<br><br>Thanks for the replies <img src="http://illiweb.com/fa/i/smiles/icon_biggrin.png" alt="Very Happy" longdesc="1">

I got to thinking, and this one is actually a birch tree fork, unless some1 with some knowledge says different.<br><br><a target="_blank" href="http://theslingshotforum.forumotion.com/viewimage.forum?u=http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/3994/img2011101200109.jpg"><img src="http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/3994/img2011101200109.jpg" alt=""></a><br><br>

Haha if only maple was easier to get out west. Le sigh.<br><br>As for birch, my knowledge of it mostly stems from making musical instruments, but as long as it's from cold climates it's generally pretty sturdy. The warmer the climate, the softer and more pliable the wood.<br><br>Unless you're importing it from the states, I'd say you're good. Not the strongest wood out there, but should be sufficient. <br><br>Looks pretty nice though, kudos.

I think Maple is plenty tough and attractive. They make guitar necks & finger boards from it, so it must be fairly tough. Rock on!

I'm impressed with this design and very happy with the grain of the wood and color.<br><br>Thx for the inspiration Joerg!

    UPDATE- Wigglesworth's imitation Hand Howitzer is COMPLETE <br><br>I re-sanded it all down, because after I applied the chrome polish, I noticed that my sanding method was not all that it could be, ie: I went against the grain, and you could tell in some spots... So I re-did it, and it looks better than ever <img src="http://illiweb.com/fa/i/smiles/icon_biggrin.png" alt="Very Happy" longdesc="1"><br><br>no attachment groove though...<br><img src="http://img833.imageshack.us/img833/3283/img2011101800157.jpg" border="0" alt=""><br>By <a href="http://profile.imageshack.us/user/ryanwigglesworth" class="postlink" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">ryanwigglesworth</a> at 2011-10-18<br><img src="http://img192.imageshack.us/img192/1595/img2011101800158.jpg" border="0" alt=""><br>By <a href="http://profile.imageshack.us/user/ryanwigglesworth" class="postlink" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">ryanwigglesworth</a> at 2011-10-18<br><img src="http://img836.imageshack.us/img836/8229/img2011101800159.jpg" border="0" alt=""><br>By <a href="http://profile.imageshack.us/user/ryanwigglesworth" class="postlink" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">ryanwigglesworth</a> at 2011-10-18<br><img src="http://img651.imageshack.us/img651/6504/img2011101800160.jpg" border="0" alt=""><br>By <a href="http://profile.imageshack.us/user/ryanwigglesworth" class="postlink" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">ryanwigglesworth</a> at 2011-10-18<br><img src="http://img849.imageshack.us/img849/8862/img2011101800161.jpg" border="0" alt=""><br>By <a href="http://profile.imageshack.us/user/ryanwigglesworth" class="postlink" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">ryanwigglesworth</a> at 2011-10-18

Really nice! The Dogwood can be polished to a high shine, it is probably more dense (sinks in water). BTW, I don't use grooves on my natural howitzer, too. <br><br>How does it shoot for you? I think it is hard to beat the efficiency of that design.

I have only shot a few rounds, with single gold theraband, and it is promising, I AGREE TOTALLY, this design will be hard to beat, when I find another qualifying branch, I will add more area for band attachment though, like an inverted triangle sorta thing.<br><br>The beauty of this design has people asking me how much it cost me to buy it! LOL, some randoms don't believe I handmade it <img src="http://illiweb.com/fa/i/smiles/icon_razz.gif" alt="Razz" longdesc="9"><br><br>I noticed that the curve of the forks matches a large coffee cup from the vending machine at work... I may get an extra large and change the design some more to see how it goes.<br><br>This Birch doesn't seem to shine up all that well, but I like the feel of the wood on my hands, rather than the polyurethane that I normally coat them in.<br><br><br>Hey Joerg, how many coats of the polish are you putting on?<br><br>Also, perhaps its the brand and color of polish that is giving me lesser results? I'm using Blue Magic metal polish creme, and it is blue...
