Stumbled across a posting about slingshots and thought "hey, that looks like fun"... so after lurking a bit and reading alot, I decided to nab a branch from the maple tree in our yard (when the wife wasn't looking) and give it a go.<br><br>Still need to get some decent bands for it (just used a massive rubber band I had at hand) but overall I'm satisfied with the end results.<br><br>It's got a bit of ergonomics to it, with indents for my fingers. Otherwise, it's just the natural fork.<br><br>Whatcha think for a first attempt?<br><br><img src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-0JS2AU3CQ7Y/Ts0r1FKko_I/AAAAAAAAQ1I/mh-IHTBJ5Bk/s576/2011-11-23-056.jpg" border="0" alt=""><br><img src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-g4LYz4Mx_rs/Ts0r3odK5_I/AAAAAAAAQ1Y/OJdls1kRrR0/s576/2011-11-23-057.jpg" border="0" alt=""><br><img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-X8SImXDS3Ac/Ts0r8KhZvDI/AAAAAAAAQ2A/eWgg3WH2hlQ/s576/2011-11-23-058.jpg" border="0" alt=""><br><img src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-mOZmOLuVQh0/Ts0r9QkV2QI/AAAAAAAAQ18/0jckOZ11n9Y/s576/2011-11-23-059.jpg" border="0" alt=""><br><img src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-3vt484b-xWo/Ts0r8mju4tI/AAAAAAAAQ2E/Xv-kk8wOLpQ/s576/2011-11-23-060.jpg" border="0" alt=""><br><img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-6m2VuJWUguI/Ts0r1WSwCpI/AAAAAAAAQ1M/A44Ti7JtFY4/s576/2011-11-23-061.jpg" border="0" alt=""><br><img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-vGU6guLmvIU/Ts0ryVYoIuI/AAAAAAAAQ1A/ZZGxc16glOs/s576/2011-11-23-062.jpg" border="0" alt="">

The boys (3 and 12) weren't going to let dad have all the fun, so I ended up making two more from the same branch, and also redid the bands on the first one to be a bit lighter, with a better piece of leather, and attached with elastic rather than string.<br><br><img src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-CHO8jmqdN7g/Ts6AQ7bTEcI/AAAAAAAAQ2Y/sBWJCu6voXo/s800/2011-11-24-064.jpg" border="0" alt="">

OK, it's probably my instinctive archery skills helping out alot, but<br> I'm gobsmacked that I just hit a bottle 4 times in a row from 8 meters.<br> Kriminy! Need to get some decent ammo and see what this thing can <br>really do ;-)

Good thing it didn't sling back into your eye. It seemed a bit on the thin side but I didn't expect that could happen anyway.<br>You'll just have to make thicker frames:)<br><br><br>Cheers

Well... that ought to take care of it... (while I'm making another)...<br><br>A tight whip of waxed linen, saturated with wood glue. Put it on both sides just for symmetry.<br><br><img src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-Dy_c9Ee5w08/TtOqZ_j21bI/AAAAAAAARBA/2u294o_8GcQ/s640/2011-11-28-080.jpg" border="0" alt="">

I wouldn't try that, Joerg did an interesting simulation of a broken off piece of fork flying back to the shooters eyeball. That shit can take your eye out even through safety glasses.

<span class="postbody"><br><br>Sounds like wisdom. I guess I'll just have to retire "my first". Off for a walk in the woods to find another (slightly beefier) natural fork...</span>

Yeah the troble with the classics is they stand no chance with the stronger bands well when you double them at least. im constantly looking for new wood and designing and redesigning. Sometimes when you after one thing and working hours getting the shape right it breaks leaving you to compromise but you could get something better. Thats life and we learn from failures. Im finding making slingshots is as addictive as getting a new tattoo.
