Thierry from New Caledonia traded three beautiful "Tree Of Life" forks and a block of sandalwood against a Panther. He calls the wood "Gaiac", which makes perfect sense.

I think I got the far better deal here. This wood is very hard (three times harder than oak), dense and heavy, with buttery yellow sapwood and a very dark core.

I selected the one I wanted to start working on.

Sure. 90 minutes for the shaping, 90 minutes for the sanding and polishing. 3 hours total.

Raspwork is done quickly, the filework takes longer.

    Very good Joerg,
You turn the natural forks into sculptures, rather than leaving the natural shape.

I have to sculpt them, as I don't like the finger support grip and natural forks don't work well in the hammer grip the way they are.

The way I carve them, they retain the unmatched stability of a natural fork.

One of my favorite slingshots. Simple, functional, and beautiful.
