Yeah, I had this when I first started shooting. The first time that I spent a day shooting and testing I could barely grip a pencil afterward.

Your muscles are used to the pinching motion, you do it every day. However, it's new to your thumb to have to hold pressure on something like the slingshot pouch. Just keep at it and you'll see that it doesn't bother you after a while. You can do some exercises by pinching one of those stress relief balls when you're not shooting. If it persists, see your doctor, it may be a treatable condition.

Artifex may be right, and it's just soreness caused by repetitive motion that you're not used to yet. If it starts hurting really badly, though, it could be tendonitis, an inflammation of the sheathing around the tendon. This can also be caused by repetitive movements. I've had it a few times in my fingers from using a hand-operated rivet press for making kydex knife sheaths. Not much you can do about it except let it heal for a couple weeks. Trust me, though, you will KNOW if it's tendonitis. It REALLY hurts after the first few days. Not trying to freak you out or anything, just keep an eye on it and maybe give your hand a rest for a few days and see if it goes away.

I had the same problem. Just pace yourself and it will eventually get better. Happy shooting
