Hi guys i hve an old SOLINGEN cane sword stick thing that has been in the family for 50 plus years . I was the only one who liked it ,this was years ago.
I am now musing over the idea of turning it into a SLINGSWORD MOUNTAIN WALKING STICK . The idea would be to use it when i go walking in my wifes families Mountain house . I am thinking of using small powerful fishing reel type magnets on the upper half of the stick and a washer on the bottom half to securely lock it where the sword goes into the scabbered ??? i think . The problem is how do i hollow out the centre of bottom half of the stick bearing in mind that i am not a great craftsman or woodworker keeping a home made drill bit straight for over two feet will not be possible for me i think , should i split it hollow it out and reglue . Could be interesting ohhh the bamboo has seen better days . I also could acquire some new bamboo as it grows around these parts but there is no rush as i have to let the stick dry first Cheers chaps Martin will upload some pics from the mobile cheers

Oh what a lovely swordstick. I used to collect them years ago.

I think there might be an easy way to make one as it's damn near impossible to drill a 2' long hole in a stick without a serious lathe. When i can source a decent blade I shall make one.

The idea is simple. The main body of the swordstick to be made from TWO HALFROUND DOWELS ! The blade slot can then be easily routed or carved out and then glued up. Easy- peasy.

If I could lay my hands on an old fencing foil of decent quality that would do nicely.

(None of my business but it seems a shame to sacrifice such a nice old piece unless it's absolutely disintegrating. Perhaps worth starting from scratch?)

Are you sure you want to destroy it? Sword sticks are illegal in Germany and no new ones are produced in Solingen.

You might want to get an appraisal before you do anything else.

I like Ruthie's idea about the half dowels. Those are pretty inexpensive where I'm at.

Adding cool accessories you build to the piece sounds like the way to go. Zero regret potential!

Also stuff you make adds to the heirloom value of it.
Someday maybe it will be what reminds your great great great grandchildren of you, who knows?
