ordered some kangaroo leather, estimated delivery is in two weeks. according to wikipedia, it is 10 times stronger than cowhide.

this sounds too awesome to be true! is kangaroo leather really that strong? any one tested this?

how does the density compare? i figure roo leather will be denser, so a roo leather pouch will be less than 10 times lighter than a cow leather pouch, right?

i tested a pouch a made from the kangaroo leather. the pouch was 30 mm wide, 1.6 mm thick and had 10 mm holes that were 10mm from the sides. i folded the pouch in half, and i put paracord between the two band holes and tied it to a rack. i then slipped another piece of paracord between the two parts of the folded pouch( like loading ammo) and tied it in a loop. i hung from the loop, i weigh between 100-110 pounds, and the pouch stretched a lot but did not break. it finally broke when i started bouncing.

i will make another pouch out of 1/8 inch thick ( almost twice as thick) cow leather and test it.

ok. the cow leather was able to hold my body weight plus a little less than 80 pounds. but it was very stretched out and i am sure that it would have broken within adding another 20 pounds. so the strength of my roo leather and cow leather was about the same. maybe i just have really good quality cow leather, bad quality roo leather, or the strength of roo leather is just over exaggerated.

great test. i was just wondering, the cow was twice as thick right? so wouldn't it be more fair if you sand/cut it to the same thickness or buy thinner stuff and than test again?

i guess, but twice as thick should mean twice as strong. my test only proves that 1 piece of kangaroo leather is about half the strength of a layer of cow leather that is twice as thick. maybe cow leather loses strength as it is cut thinner, so the kangaroo leather might be stronger at an equal thickness.

um 150mm long. i use pretty big ammo. i dont think it really matters, as long as the width and hole size are the same.

Thanks Zwillie, that is an awesome shop, I'll probably order other materials from there as well!
Do you use the 0.6mm thick leather? That's really thin, I'm wondering if it will be ok for 25mm steel?

Wow, they only sell 0,5m² skins and the listed price is only for a 10cmx10cm piece. That means a whole skin costs around 105€ ... without shipping.
