I had some Sweet Gum in my shed for like two years and much to my delight it took on a Spalt. Wild patterns which I love! To me its almost like a camoflage coloring. This one I made for me and it fits dead on. Over an inch thick in spots with carve outs and a slight Palm Swell. This one is a shooter. Had to pin it in one spot because of a litte crack but with all the patterns it is hardly noticeable. For those not familiar with Sweet Gum. It is used for fine furniture. The tree itself sheds those sticky, thorny "itchy balls"( we called them as kids). You can easily turn an ankle on one of them. Cool wood. Glad I didn't cut all the trees down. I'll deal with the "Itchy Balls" if I continue to get wood like this! Hi Brain,
well with Spalt or a Burl every bit of extra hardness helps so I dunked this frame about 4 times In a Gloss Spar Urethane. Love that Glossy look! Flatband

The high gloss gives the grain a lot of depth. I like it.
