Have made a huge crossbow today, chambered for the Cold Steel Short Assegai (actually the long version will fit, too).

See the Assegai on the Cold Steel homepage

Basically, a supersized version of the throwing knife shooter.

Total length is 220 cm (7,2 ft), weight is 8 kg (18 lb). A monster!

In order to master the huge draw weight (about 200 lb) and draw length (power stroke is 130 cm = 51"), you wrap the rope that is attached to the muzzle around a tree and lock the rope with a carabiner. Then you take the weapon between your legs and walk backwards, until the string locks in place.

Then you secure the front "tree" rope and load the Assegai from the muzzle side.

The power is absolutely phenomenal. It went clean through the double straw mat (that holds back arrows shot from 70 lb compound bow), and stuck in the wooden shed wall. It fire WAY harder than you can possibly stab or throw the weapon.

I think this is about the biggest crossbow that is still somewhat portable! Great fun. Will do the video tomorrow.

It's very nice and strong, of course.
Could you show your cocking-method tommorow, please? It's a funny imagination.
If suddenly zombies attack, this weapon won't be your choice, because it needs time to cock, or not?
A very big compliment for this masterpiece of strength!
Excited to see this video.

@ Antraxx: Is it a bad idea to hang some slingshots on the wall?

I only came across Your YouTube channel two days ago but Your videos spurred me on to join the forum and become yet another addict. I must say I find Your work tremendously inspiring.

This reminds me of a tale by an airgun collector and writer, he was testing an antique butt flask pnuematic pistol in .44 calibre at the time.
Not caring about the condition of his beat up shed, he thought he would test it on the 3/8" wooden door thinking that was all the backstop he needed.

The lead ball passed straight through the door, the back of the shed and buckled the wheel of his bicycle that was stood up behind it

I'm really looking forward to the video today.

    Safety catches are for whimps

I estimate that it flies at about 20 m/s. It weighs almost exactly the same as the boule ball (720 gramms)! I use two full TBG bands per side - just one third of the rubber we use for the cannon. Plus, the draw is "only" 2 meters instead of 3.

I think we may be able to convert the cannon to shoot the spear - imagine the impact of that thing when it flies at 53 m/s...

If you get it to shoot from the cannon, you have to shoot at the car!
Funny, the German gov't banned arm braces......ha ha ha ha
