Using rope as opposed to rubber as the energy source has been around since before the birth of Christ. Are there any modern (and viable for the hobbyist) plans available for a rope-powered ballista that is hand held as opposed to a carriage-mounted weapon?

I think it would be hard to scale a ballista down to handsize,
bcs the moving parts have to be strong enough for the forces
that are as big as on conventional crossbows.

It'd be a bit hard to get a good concept for a rope-tension hand-held weapon. It would also be difficult to use.

Such stonebows have been around for a long time too. The one in this video seemed very weak, though.

Many Brazilian indians used and still use it! called "Bodoque". Dual corded weapon, elastic wood called "mofumbo".
