It is not at all necessary unless the face laminates are totally weak. The more layers, the stronger the slingshot, especially if the grain orientation is alternated between layers. Multiplex in the core just provides for a bombproof slingshot that will not break under human loads. It also looks pretty cool!

i just made a few with multiplex cores, and besides the strength it provides, like nathan said, it does look rather sweet. It reminds me of adidas stripes, if you know what I mean.<br><a href="http://www.servimg.com/image_preview.php?i=44&u=16880161" class="postlink" target="_blank" rel="nofollow"><img src="http://i48.servimg.com/u/f48/16/88/01/61/adidas10.jpg" border="0" alt=""></a><br><a href="http://www.servimg.com/image_preview.php?i=45&u=16880161" class="postlink" target="_blank" rel="nofollow"><img src="http://i48.servimg.com/u/f48/16/88/01/61/ambi0053.jpg" border="0" alt=""></a>
