I tested the latest version of the "Self cocking" (misleading title) pistol crossbow for speed and muzzle energy. Surprisingly it almost reaches the fps they pretend it has :)

Not so bad, if you keep in mind how short the power stroke is.

  3. i have one of these and it is really powerful!
with heavier bolts it even had some recoil!
also the self cocking is awesome and that needs to be made into a slingshot crossbow!!!

@Jörg: Exactly! I was really surprised!
@theartofweapons: Yes, I thought the same! I guess we both will have a race who can build something like this first, my friend :D I guess you will win because I won't have access to a shop for at leat 3 month ^^

I have the non- self cocking version of that. Fun little toy, and while not lethal is certainly capable of inflicting a bit of damage. I actually bothered to make broadheads for it. Problem is the head does not overhang the 'muzzle', so it gets caught a bit in the track. Interesting exercise, but far more work than reward. I just use the standard bolts for it now.

What is more fun is that the "heavy" bolts are hollow, and can therefore be filled with powder. Drill a hole in the tip, add a needle and a primer.... :)
