Continuing the quest for the perfect slingshot (is there such a thing?). I decided to make a laminated frame with a steel core and faced with hardwood. This allows me to have smaller cross sections in the fork without fear of breaking.

Here are some pictures of the steel core which is a little over 1/8" thick. The first picture shows where I've done all the cutting I can do with a metal cutting band saw and have sanded down to the line on the bottom of the handle with my belt grinder.

The kerfs in from the sides go to the cut line and help speed the process of rasping out the waste. Having the right power tools really speeds this process along but a hacksaw, rasp, and files would work OK if you have lots of patience, stamina and more patience.

Here's the frame afte rasping out the waste.

And here's a couple more pictures of the finished steel core.

If anyone is interested, I'll trace the outline of this and upload it.

Chuck

Thanks everyone for the generous comments. Here's where I am today.

Bacote is not my favorite hardwood, but after a visit to the local Woodcraft, I didn't find anything I liked, especially at their prices which apparently only the 1% can afford. So I used what I had on hand. The wood laminations are each a little over 1/4" thick and have been epoxied to the steel core. Then I used a flush cutting router bit to cut the wood to the profile of the core. Did a little cleanup of the glue and some sanding off rough spots but no finish yet. Still have to decide if I'll add a palm swell and perhaps finger contours.

Chuck

That is becoming a great slingshot, if i were you i would only give it a nice palmswell and leave the contours intact by not adding finger grooves.

edit; flippinout slingshots just popped up seeing this, i would make it kind of like that

Looks great. I would just round the edges, polish and oil it.

The wood is not sooo bad ... , i like the grain strips! You just have to finish the fine form, then it will be smart and nice.

Do you plan to add pins to secure the wood to the metal?

Thanks again, everyone, for the continued interest and support.

Got it done to the point of 1 coat of Formby's tung oil applied. Will need a few more coats to really bring out the finish. I didn't add anything to the front side.

The grip feels a little flat on the front, but maybe I just need to use it for a bit.

Chuck
