I would start out with anything that is a hardwood. In my experience they are a little harder to work by hand however the strength and durability is unmatched. Soft woods can be weak and brittle. Also try to have the tree grain run top to bottom on slingshot (forks to handle) not left to right (fork to fork). This gives you added strength as well.

I was told of it has fruit or berries it'll be good for Natty's. I don't know if that holds true around the world but is a good guideline ;) good luck.
