Hello guys

after many hours of work i finished my metal core project.
It´s my favourite design, jörg´s hammerhead.

I made it from a red asian hardwood and an aluminium core.
The wood is very special, the hardest wood i´ve ever worked with. i needed sawblades that are usually used for metal to get it in shape. woodsawblades just burned after a few seconds

I made the finish with beeswax after sanding and polishing.

here some pics:

I´m really happy with the result i think the best slingshot i´ve ever made
time to make some bands and shoot it
I hope you like it!

Awesome! I love the square-ish forks with the softened edges. Perfect.
Anyone know what the wood is? Looks similar to the Ironwood floors we have on our ground floor.

     thanks guys!

...i dont know the wood type. we have a package "mixed" asian woods in our stock. these are trees that got damaged during the harvesting of commercial woods. this trunks get collected and sold as "mixed".
I talked with a guy who sells wood from all over the world and even he didn´t know the exact wood type. but it´s sure that its not a commercial traded type of wood.

i think thats really cool so this slingshot might be unique

...it has really a very nice colouring, from yellow over orange to dark red and brown.
and as i said, the hardest wood i´ve ever seen.

    Great slingshot!

You know, it does look like Mahogany. The color, the density and the fine fissures in the structure...

Mahogany is very hard and dulled one of my sawblades as well.

Asian hardwood you say? I was inclined to say Burmese teak but your description matches closer to Red Balau (tataenterprises.net/Mechanical%20Property/redbalau.html) and these play hell with my power tools. Balau trees don't have thick trunks but slender and straight and very very hard... think of them as wood high on viagra! and using wood rasp on them is like scratching an itch.

If not Red Balau, even regular Balau (sabana.com/balau-wood.html) is freaking tough to work with and their trunks are used in supporting poles for kelongs (Malay word for off-shore fishing platform (check Wikipedia.org for proper definition). Teak can weather the outdoor elements very well but I really can't think of another wood that can stand up to be soaked in abusive marine environment for years.

Earlier today, I was helping a customer match driftwoods for aquarium-scaping and found a piece of wood-fork that has slingshot potential. Will shoot a pic of it during the day and get some opinions.

Being a new member, I can't link up to external URLs, so if hints don't show, add www(dot) in front of the addresses. Googling will help too.

Regards,
Ron in SG
