3/8th steel (or iron) are too light for hunting, in my opinion. Use 12 mm steel or .44 (11 mm) lead works OK.

Not to hijack, but expand on the topic: Does the size of the ammo vary according the animal being hunted? Would the 3/8 be fine for rabbit and smaller? How small could you go for squirrels? Birds?

3/8" lead is supposed to work great on bunnies up close, though I've yet to try it. 3/8" steel is just too light, even for rabbits. For comparison, steel in this size runs about 55 grains, while lead runs about 79 grains, about a 30% increase. I'd imagine 3/8" steel would be fine on rats and the like, though.

Hmm. That's surprising. So I guest for hunting, lead really is the way to go. More weight for a given dia. ball.
Has anyone done a chart, matching up ammo to given bands being used? Like; 3/8 lead, for hunting is most efficiently shot using "X" color therabands( for example), at "X" amount of inches long or pounds drawn. Or "X" inches of green theratube is most efficient, for fast target shooting, when used with "X" size steel ammo.Don't know if I'm making sense? Would let folks pick the right ammo/bands/length of draw in combination, to give them the optimum performance for what they are wanting to do.
Yes/No?

A " F.A.Q" section would be great on this forum. In exemple, about bands, ammo, hunting, finish, woods, ... We already have those informations in the forum but it is a lot of browsing to get it.

I use .45 lead balls on rabbits with great results (as long as I do my part). I also use .45 lead balls on deer, but launch them much faster using a "smoke pole".
