As I am currently investigating the "David sling" concept, I became a member of slinging.org. A great website and forum with a ton of information about that ancient weapon type.

"Curious Aardvark", the admin of that site, suggested I look into a weapon called a "hoopack". It is basically a staff sling with a forked tip. Advantages are less band entanglement and also a slight spin given to the ammo.

Interesting concept for sure!

I made a test device yesterday, basically a forearm mounted short hoopack with adjustable "loop launcher" and a manual loop retainer.

The adjustable loop launcher allows you to change the angle. This way you can adjust the launch timing, in order to get just the right throwing distance.

The loop retainer makes sure that the loop does not slip of before you want to. You press down the "trigger" when you start the swing towards the target. The loop releases automatically once the hook is in the right position.

Will see how it shoots! It was already dark when I finished the weapon yesterday.

So you manually throw the shot like a traditional sling, but instead of releasing the end from your fingers, you squeeze the grip to release it?

The "trigger" is only a safety. The release is automatic, always at the same moment. And that moment is adjustable.

And yes, all this to achieve a reproduceable release - which is the one and only critical part in slinging. It takes years of practice to get to that point with a conventional sling.

In other words: Without that thing, I can't really hit anything with a sling. Way not enough practice.

Great idea. My stepfather was able to hit a flying bird with a sling. He was doing 4 or 5 spinning before releazing it. I tryed it and the only thing i could hit was a window behind me. That' s why i never tryed again. I stick to slingshots... safer for me and my environment.

Great construction Joerg, but I prefer a normal sling.

@tokSick Wow hitting birds is very hard. How long has he trained for it? I am also not good in hitting things with a sling but it make fun to shoot.

I switched to boule balls today. My poor catchbox is ruined. The impact is just amazing - and I am now hitting it more often than not. I think I can be very accurate with this, soon.

He was using one when he was a child in Morokko. I think he used one for more then 20 years, two years before he died he was still able to hit a cola can at about 50 metre. He was just amazing.

He was not spinning it from behind to the front like Joerg but from the front to the back,4 or 5 spinning then release it.

I also sling from the right to left over my head. I do three revolutions and release as the ball arcs to my right side. I don't use this type of sling for anything under 50ft, and I prefer 75ft. The impact force is incredible if thrown correctly.

Round balls are ok, but I mold my own in an egg or American Football shape. I use cement and form them in wooden molds.

Brian
