This is my first attempt at making a slingshot. I'll admit though I did have a good model to reference, as I got a Persimmon slingshot in exchange for some raw forks, from Jörg.

A little background on the fork itself. I cut a fork off of a Mesquite tree that was on my girlfriends parent's property. It was coming down anyway and there was one decent fork on it so I grabbed it. The problem though is that there are many boring insects here and this one was infested as a lot of trees are. So there were big holes through the heartwood in certain spots. One of these runs right down the back side of one of the forks. I hope it is strong enough, but Mesquite is a pretty hard wood so I think it'll be all right.

It has excellent contrast between the heartwood and outer layers, though I do wish I'd been able to get more of the outer, blonde, wood on it. I used a angle grinder with a wire wheel to knock off the bark and then a sanding disc and belt sander to rough in the shape. When it was almost there I gave it some hits in the microwave. This wood does like to crack, and I was pretty careful but there are still a couple splits at the very centers of the branches. Once it was the shape I wanted I think went from 120 up to 320 grit with some 220 in between, and coats of Linseed oil in between. I'm still working on the final finish. I've been using pumice, grade 4F, but might pick up some various steel wool grades today just to try to get it a bit smoother.

Either way, this is my first attempt at a slingshot fork, and while a blatant copy, I like to think that is the most sincere form of flattery.

I did shape a electric violin body out of purpleheart once. Still never finished that though. I've also built a good number of things out of wood, mostly 2x4 stuff, framing, and decking, but I'm getting more in to wood working. I do sculpt though =)
