I always wanted to shoot steel darts (the type used for recreational dart games). However, this is not easy. Lots of hurdles. First, steel darts aren't made for shooting. Therefore you can't shoot them overly fast as the tips break on impact. Second, the fletching is very vulnerable, in fact not made for any kind of pressure. Third, they can be quite expensive.

I found some on amazon, at 40 cents a pop! Quite cheap, but they certainly do the job.

I made an experimental pistol with my idea of how to shoot them. Toothbrush heads to hold them in place, extremely prestretched rubber and a "pinching" method to keep the backside firmly on the string.

This works quite well, the darts fly 15 meters without any problems. They stick into anything they hit - wood, aluminum, plastic.

I think this can be optimized for more compact sizes, and probably with a pump action mechanism. I had to add string guides and work with the ideal string length a lot until everything worked smoothly.

The darts are not lethal I think, but a lot of fun to play with.Amazing, what 4 cm active band length can achieve! Also note that the band wear is very low, probably because there is no tapering, and the bands never touch anything.

A very cool idea and well done performed, Joerg!
It is almost perfect...but maybe there is the opinion to add some paint to it?
I am wondering where you get these weapon shapes with the triggers already build in.
Excited to see it in action.
Keep on with these cool stuff!

This is an experimental shooter and the black paint was only to protect it from the rain (lots of it here this weekend).

My very simple locks need a long trigger so the pull is easy. So the trigger brackets have to be roomy. Form follows function, at least in this stage of a new concept.

    Very interesting.
"Form follows function", this remembers me on the lk-art lessons at school.
There was a architectural form which followed this criterion.

Today there will be the final of the World Matchplay Darts 2012.
Do you actually like the sport darts?
Sorry for bothering you with questions...I'm just curious.

Now I realised that this post is kind of spam.

Now you have just to build a slingshot which fires darts.

I love this! It's so funny because iv been thinking about shooting throwing darts from something like this for a while now, not only for penetration but for accuracy mostly because these darts are made for accuracy. I would love it if you could make a tutorial for this!

Nice. I myself am trying to plan out a slingshot catapult for launching gliders, and with that there is the same kind of problem as with this. An expensive, fragile projectile.

Ok, ...
You mean, just paint it in different color. Yes Camo will look good like the other shooters that he made. But, anyway it is good because the black color of the shooter contrasts with the background to aim at the target correctly. The camo will make it a bit hard to focus and aim in the indoor light.
