how accurate to human tissue is ballistic gel, is it more accurate that using say a pig meat?

Pig skin is pretty thick but i think the meat is similar to ballistics gel

Ballistics gel, when properly calibrate is a good approximation of the human body. There are several different materials that compose a body and they all react differently.

Skin: thin, tough, and elastic

Fat: thick (on me ),soft, and easily penetrated

Muscle: thick, hard, and dense compared to skin and fat

Bone: thickness varies, very hard, and brittle

Ballistics gel is supposed to represent all these things in one medium, thus giving you a close base line to approximate performance on the human body.

Using handgun caliber bullets, generally 12in of penetration in calibrated ballistic gelatin is considered minimum penetration for an effective wound.

    i agree with that.
however if you see some impact studies bones are added on top of that gel.
mostly pigbones.

i´m not sure where the limit for airrifles here in germany is...i think it was somewhere wround 7,5 joule.

which is, because it should NOT penetrate human skin...but it does...BS anyway if you ask me, compared to those slingshot impacts.

Some studies do add bone, most do not. Whether you hit bone or not is very subjective, and what a high speed projectile does once impacting bone is variable at best. For those reasons I think bone is usually left out to provide a more objective basis of comparison.

Sorry to hear about the nonsensical German air gun laws. Sounds like your lawmakers are about as informed on the topics they legislate as ours here in the U.S.

The problem with ballistic gelatin is it doesn't wear clothing.

A razor tip delivered from a crossbow at 250fps will slice through the same Kevlar that stops a 9mm (or slingshot steel ball) in its tracks. And let's face it, most zombies do not break into your home naked. So a 20mm slingshot ball might knock them down if you hit them in the chest, but it will not keep them down. That IMO requires a head shot.... which due to skull thickness and various environmental factors also is unlikely to really penetrate. But at least a good head shot will knock them out for a minute or so.

What if zombies appear that we don't find in video games or in movies such as walking dead ... More swift can open doors etc... Just in all less stupid... What if we hunt them and they run away ....

J well never know it might be aliens or apes (;)) that take over the earth.

i would be very interested how the results of this same test would be on 30 meter distance
that would make it more realistic to reality in the field

As tilia said distance makes a big difference.

Wrapping the Gel in a single t- shirt would also give you a whole different set of results.

Most slingshot ammo is not going to penitrate if it has to go through clothing first, where a broad head, or even a .22lr will.

Close range, no clothing slingshots have amazing power. The fact that you can shoot almost any ammo, and find it laying on the ground gives it an appeal all its own.

As a matter of fact, it would be fun to see a video where

A Joerg uses the same slingshot/slingbow and band setup for all shots
B Ballistic gel wrapped in a T-shirt for target.
    C 20-30m distance to target
D Fire several types of SS ammo, preferably about the same size, marble, steel ball, lead ball, rock, arrow, etc.
E Note how many shots required to hit target
F Note penetration of the gel.
G Same setup with Shotgun with various size ammo, 6's, 2's, bb's, buckshot.

    That would make interesting watching.

I don't know if a shotgun would be legal to use...

Well if Joerg wants to fly over I have a variety of shotgun gauges he could use for testing!
