They are pretty cool but my friend had one that exploded on him once. He walked away unhurt but I never messed with them again.

    Ahhh, my kind of thread!

This is my most recent pneumatic cannon. It's got a 1.70" inner diameter barrel (perfect for golf balls, with their 1.68" diameter). It's run through a 1.5" ported barrel sealing piston valve, which is actuated by a 1" Orbit Watermaster sprinkler valve, which is modified to be actuated by a standard blowgun. It can fire a golf ball upwards of 400 feet per second.

I build a pneumatic cannon for blowgun darts. At 7bars the arrow stuck in concrete on 20m. Never fired it again... At the moment I am building a hybrid spudgun.

Problem with these things is that this is illegal in Germany, except if you are a certified and licensed gun maker ("Waffenherstellungserlaubnis").

Everything that pushes a projetile through a barrel falls into that category. Tehre is one exception: Muscle powered devices that have no trigger ("storage of energy"). So the lung operated blowgun and even a little gun made from a bicycle pump is OK, but a potato gun is a no-no.

No... the "barrel" is a square profile, not a round tube, and it is slotted. Therefore it is legal (I hope).

@JoergS: I know that, but it is more like a science project of mine that shows, what can be built with home improvement parts. A barrel is to guide the projectile, so i would say, it is illegal.

Haha, I feel bad for you, Joerg! Slingshots are great and all, but theres something amazingly satisfying about blasting a golf ball through a 25 mm sheet of plywood!
Also something really satisfying about building a high speed dump valve out of plumbing parts to power a cannon

Sure, I would love to make all kinds of guns. I have plenty of ideas. But German law does not tolerate homemade firearms, so slingshots it is.

But I am NOT complaining, slingshots are a lot of fun, and far more silent.

hmmm makes me wonder, do you think you could build a slingsshot with rifle power? even if it's only small bore rifle?

Well, my cannon achieved the energy of a mid sized rifle round (1000 Joule,>730 ft-lb) and the momentum of a sledge hammer (38 Newton).

EDIT: You are right, back to the topic.

I am a member of the spudfiles forum, great stuff there.

lol I hadn't thought of that, I guess the size of it put it out of my mind.... I was thinking something more along the lines of the bulpup crossbow slingshot, and how that compares?

Hey Joerg, so if you built an Airowgun big enough to fit the Slingshot Cannon would it be illegal? Or maybe a spud gun scaled "Mega-dart Blowgun MX-7."
Mega-Dart Blowgun MX-7

By the way, I love air cannons. I have built three nice cannons. Two that use hairspray and are all plastic, and one heavy duty blaster that's steel, bronze and plastic and works from compressed air. The heavy duty blaster shoots a 1.5 lb. steel bullet at about 250 fps. It will shoot a 2" trailer hitch ball way more than 300 yards. It is designed to operate at over 400 p.s.i but my air compressor only goes to about 115 p.s.i.

Here is a photo of the Heavy Air Cannon clamped is the vice and being charged with air.

Here is my wife brandishing the cannon
