The metal tipped ones look like old style tattoo tools. That bug looks nasty!

I may just be guessing here but it looks like he is launching them with a straw/tube with rubber at the base. You drop a rod in the tube, pull the rubber back. Like a slingshot but a lot more accurate and a lot less powerful.
