Hello,

I'm a complete newbie and came across a youtube clip of Jorg with his medieval musket ball crossbow (slingshot based) and was really impressed with the bow and Jorg! I'm looking for some help and was hoping that you guys could give me some advise or point me in the right direction...

I want to build an egg launcher that can shoot an egg 30 meters on a target. This is for a particular (guy with their toys) event. I have friends taking the spud gun (gas) or air compression approach for their devices but I was wondering if a large medieval type crossbow could work for eggs? I could par boil them to make them a bit easier to handle.

Has anyone attempted this? Can it be done? What type of design would you recommend (band/ slingshot or rather a flexible bow)? Any recommended designs or blueprints that I could base it on would be really appreciated. This is for an outdoor & offroad event with 22 guys.

Thanks so much!!!

marcus.

i think you could easily make a catapult-trebuchet kind of contraption using rubber. It may not be very accurate but i cant think of anything funnier that a catapult swinging a dozen eggs at a human target.

i think u can build it with 4-5 planks of wood, 2 for the base, one for the swing arm and another one to stop the swing arm when it reaches the vertical position.I can draw something out if u need it

I'm going to try to build both. This is for an offroad ralley with 12 Jeep Wranglers and 22 guys. The egg launching assignment is still secret but I've heard rumours that we are all going to use the team with the lowest score on day2 as target! Should be hilarious. I'll send you a PM with my email address. Would be great if you can send a little sketch. Thanks so much!

That looks fine. If the Theraband doesn't get here in time then what sort of rubber would work well for this? Bicycle tube perhaps? Needs to be something that you can easily get in a slightly less developed country like Oman!

bicycle tube would be ok i guess, but it isn't very stretchy or powerful, i think you should look for some thin spear gun rubber. If u cant find that then you can use surgical rubber tubes that are avelaible in any drug store and work quite well. Its cheap too, so u can use a lot of it to make a decent weapon.

Another thing that i forgot to mention in the scetch is that a smaller angle between the swing arm and the base when the arm stops, will increase the distance you shoot.u can achieve various distances by teeing a rope to the end of the arm, right below the bowl, and to the back of the base. The shorter the rope between them , the bigger the arch that the eggs will follow. So, by simply changing he lenght of the rope between the 2, u change the distance that you shoot.

Ha - who would have know but a harpoon is forbidden over here. BUT....they have a Hawaiian alternative and I found replacement rubber for that! It's the same rubber as on a harpoon - amazing stuff!!
