I was checking my email today and noticed one from Chief AJ. I'm just going to quote it over "1/25/2012 Today the NSA named the Slingshot Shooter of the Year for 2011.

Man of Valor, Jeff Pearmain who did what has not even been attempted before, set out to get a legal Black Bear with a slingshot. Fist He had to talk Fish & Game into a permit which took three attempts. Which permit obtained He had to make the shot. What courage it took to use a slingshot 4" wide, 7" tall and only 8 oz to shoot an arrow into a dangerous bear at very close range. Jeff made the pressure shot to bag the Bear and become the Fist Slingshot Shooter to earn the coveted NSA "SHOOTER OF THE YEAR" trophy. Congratulations to Champion Shooter Jeff Pearmain."

I guess I missed it when he did this, but that's awesome. That is definately the guy that deserves a trophy. I'll stick with rabbits.

He eats the meat. I prefer hunting versus the murder factories that store bought meat comes from.

As far as not killing even to eat, congrats. It's great that you chose to live that life style, but do you honestly believe everyone should live their lives like you do?

This was legally done, which means it is done for population control. Too many black bears and some will starve or begin coming into towns. The hunting limits are placed in hopes of preventing either of those 2 outcomes. I used to have problems with hunting before a park ranger told me about why the seasons exist.

I perfectly agree with your sentiments when applied to poachers. The unfortunate truth is we have made a mess of the world and now these things have to be done to prevent the animals from suffering and/or expanding into towns.

I'm not trying to convert you, but more point out legal hunting exists for a reason more than mindless killing.

BTW I only fish and not hunt.

I disagree. Some of the most natural things in nature is self preservation. A hungry bear will go rogue rather than starve, AKA kill humans. To help prevent this we do another natural part of being human, hunting. If an ape will kill animals to eat meat and we are descended from them, then how is it not natural?

I can agree with your moral disagreement with it, but that isn't natural. I will have to say that it's a good thing we have started setting limits. The self preservation aspect of our psychology tends to make us go overboard.
Im not sure what this forum was turning into, but cheif can hunt bears all he wants , deer or anything else, we dont know if he ate it or not so getting upset about someone elses preferance . is to say the least foolish.

that being said Im not sure if I would trust a slingbow Like i saw him use on youtube would afford me any safety if I wounded the animal and it took a notion to strike back.
my whole family hunted, and Ive seen a 30-06 just glance off the bears skull, and it keep comming, you dont want that with a highpowered rifle, let alone a slingbow.

I think that unless you can achieve the standard bow ,FPS speeds, and penetration to equal, then and only then should it be used for hunting , otherwise some idiots will run out make any ole slingbow then wound hundreds of animals potentially.
THIS TO ME IS WHAT SHOULD BE AVOIDED.

and just to be clear, it has been proven time and again wild game in northamerica is safer than beef or pork in america.
so if you eat game eat more , and less beef pork and chicken in America and Canada. And dont eat any in england.
wild game is more safe. less hormones and no one gets mad cow from a deer or bear.

Apparently you have never eaten bear breakfast sausage or kielbasa sausage. I never did see where it said that he didn't eat his harvest and surely hope he did. I agree with ya for the eat what you shoot ethic and as for me I strive for one shot, one kill on all my shots. Not harpin on ya, just giving the guy the benefit of the doubt on this one.
r4r4ever
What an impressive and extremely courageous hunt!

Also, i respectfully disagree with those who say we should not hunt; killing other animals is part of the human species omnivorous nature and contributes to our survival (obtaining food, eliminating dangerous vermin and combatting parasites), our advancement (understanding nature and developing new technologies sometimes involve killing animals) and even our sanity (maintaining a sense of connection to nature).
I honestly believe that the lack of interest in (or even outright opposition to) survivalism is the leading cause of both the steady drop in global I.Q. and the frequent lack of independence on an individual scale throughout most of the "westernized world"; this is extremely disturbing as it feels as if the majority of humans are slowly turning (or being turned) into cattle, which brings to mind vivid images of a frightening future comparable to scenes from "The time machine", "1984" and "Logan's run" where people are forced, under threat, the be subject to the terrifying whims of nature and the aggression of those with nothing left to lose.

I'm not wanting to start a fight or an argument, i'm just saying that we should have more respect for hunters and survivalists. Saying that "he deserves to get an arrow up his ..." or that "he deserves to be hunted" crossed the line and was extremely disrespectful towards someone who was simply acting in accordance with his (human) nature, and by extension was disrespectful towards all human beings who wish to live a natural and independent life.
After all this forum is place to discuss slingshots (and other weapons), not a place to pass highly subjective judgements.
OK, I am a hunter (Rifles, bows, slingshots (recently), and hopefully soon spearguns) and as such I must say it was an impressive kill. (I have yet to find the video I hope it did not suffer or get wasted) But if a man can drop a bear with a slingbow good on him. NOW.... I understand hunting for food (I m an avid hunter) though he did this for "fame" even if he used every part of that animal he is still slightly a douche... Please try to understand other people's feelings and do not be rude to each other. I understand the "epicness" of this shot but you need to understand that some people (most on this forum) do not dondone the killing of animals. If I remember correctly it is actually illegal in most places outside of the US after all.

I avoid posting pics of my hunts with my slingshots and blowpipes in order to avoid such conversations. It's usually just good idea to avoid such topics.
