Antler is just a beautiful material to work with. January and February is shedding season, so I anticipate adding to my collection when the snow starts to melt.

Now, there are a lot of ways to work with antler. The most obvious, in terms of slingshots, would have to be the antlers of the mule deer.

Look at those forks - they just scream "slingshot". I found a single shed last year, and I sawed off a fork and used that as a slingshot for some time.

A little bit of buckskin on the handle and it's golden.

Anybody else here work with antler? Any other design ideas?

I know Jorg has made some with antler handles. I don't know about full antler though. The first idea that occurred to me was to make a double slingshot, if only to be silly.

Realistically though, antler is a pretty hard to work with material, and if you do much at all to it, it loses much of its integrity and beauty, so were I making one, it'd probably turn out exactly as the one you described. I would think most of the wondrous variety will depend on the luck of the draw regarding what dropped antlers you find.

You could try various dyes/inks/finishes and see if you could come up with something cool. That might be nifty to have a strange bright color accenting the natural marble of the antler.

Just a few ideas. I totally want to see that antler slingshot! Take some pictures and throw them up here!

I ended up sawing off one of the tines for another project... However, I have a ton of various antler bits, so I could put one together easily enough.

I like the idea of staining/dying it different colours. That never really occured to me. Actually, I have an arced whitetail antler that I've been eyeing at making a sling bow out of, so something might come out of that.
