well I've been doing a spot of ammo testing of late, mainly due the the evolution of my slingshot use, I've gone from simple target pinking to full on pest control/hunting.

as a lot of folks have, I started with marbles, and at a close range these are ok I find, but only for knocking cans over at around 20 feet- not massively precise or impressive. I've found for long range shooting they can drift and curl like my dad slicing a shot playing golf lol, a bit unpredictable!

with the wee bit of ratting I do, I'd upped to 9.5mm steel BBs, talk about an upgrade! more range, accuracy power behind a hit, granted that all my rat shooting is done at less than 20 feet with my slingshot but it dropped the lil bugger no worries!

then today, I became a 'born again slingshooter' I cast my 1st batch of 12mm lead balls.....

I had a little scrap lead lying around but managed to get a good few wheel eights from a local garage this afternoon too

a bit messy but it was my 1st time lol

PERFECT!

from today's session I have found a) get in a decent supply of Meths for the burner, I only did one run as I ran out of fuel lol b) 2 sets of pliers are handier than just one & c) a pair of side cutters for cleaning the balls up would be handy.

I've only taken a few shots with it, and I'll be honest it's transformed oppinions on heavier ammo. Shooting the 12mm leads is something I wish i'd done a long time ago! i'm going to get a few more cast up tomorrow and head to the woods for some test shooting with my Gamekeeper Pocket Rocket 3, look out all you bunnies!

    Casting ey?

I cast on daily basis...both noble and non precious alloys. Cast aluminum for my crossbow hobby too. Lots to this stuff.

Gas is good fuel, but it's a waste unless you contain the heat.

Charcoal is one of my favorites...you simply drop some in a bucket, light it, and then stick the crucible (or a can) into the hot coal and it does double duty acting as a heat source and at the same time as an insulator, since coal is in direct contact with the crucible - heat transfer is great.

Nice mold by the way.

Ivo

PS: If you want to read up a bit on the subject, check out this site and the book...it's good stuff.

http://prometheus.vndv.com/

http://prometheus.vndv.com/tutorial.html
