I've just got 3000 6mm steel balls and was wondering if anybody uses this size in their slingshots and what they use them for . I assume they are too small for hunting , but could be used for target shooting and cans .

Yes, way too small and light for hunting, but fine for targets and cans. Just make sure you use them with light bands if you're shooting an over-the-top style slingshot or you'll get nasty handslaps.

edit: In fact, I'd say use light bands with these on any slingshot. If you're shooting a tubular rubber slingy, I'd go with something like Trumark's RRT bands. The reason is that the 6mm ammo is so light that it'll really cause heavier bands to beat themselves up and wear out faster.

P.S. For comparison, a 6mm steel bearing weighs about 15-16 grains (about 1 gram) while the more common (at least here in the USA) 9.5mm (3/8") bearing weighs about 55 grains (3.5 grams).

I think 6mm would be fine for small birds...

For pest control on something sparrow or mouse size they would certainly work, but I definitely wouldn't use them on game sized birds or mammals.
