Default Raw Power Discussion Thread

This tread is to discuss findings and/or noted problems while pushing the power envelope for a handheld slingshot.

Seeing as two have set very high values the past week in videos, it is time to start sharing ideas to push the limit further together.

Obviously, there is no better forum to push the power envelope then this one. Perhaps Jorg will even join in now that he works out regularly again.

First observation: it seems that starship style slingshots may not be the answer to the power quest. All the starships I have tested become hard to handle when the bands start to get too powerful. I have even used deep armrests, that almost surround my arm at nearly the elbow level, and the thing still gets shaky when pulling heavy bands.

Many, including my brother, seem to have a lot higher success rate with simple forks that rest low in the hand.

For this reason, I am building a solid, simple, wide fork tip, OTT slingshot for my quest for power. It will lock into the hand solidly.

Second observation: pinballs or huge ammo may not be the answer to the quest. My brother and I have acquired a wide range of ammo sizes in 1/8" increments from 5/8" through 1.25". General observation is that the band power you need to push the larger ammo fast enough is very likely beyond the ability of all of us power monsters. It would seem 3/4" and 7/8" are the sweet spot for quad 1" to 3/4" tapers full butterfly (500% extension)....studies still ongoing once the new catchbox, with steel plate backing, is in place.

This may not be related, but is it possible to launch a 8-10mm steel ball with a speed of 100 m/s with a handheld slingshot? Looks like Joerg and other's can only reach 70 m/s with 20mm steel balls. Shouldn't smaller diameter ammo be able to fly faster? I'm thinking about using a starship.

Yes you can, but with very tapered bands that dont last so many shots.

How about a 250 cm effective draw? Do you think I'd be able to reach that speed with such long bands? I imagine clamping a slingshot fork in a vice and step back a few meters and release. Because the bands are gradually getting streched, and only stay stretched for about 3 seconds, they shouldn't be able to cool down too fast.

Stretching a band to such a length results in a really thin rubber...until it can retract again... The thin rubber will cool down at a very high rate since it surface is increasing as well...

You'll have to release writhing less than 3 secs to get good results...

With power shots I have found my limit with full width TBG per fork cut into various tapers. Optimal power with this setup seems to come with ammo between 100 and 300 grams.

Guys, I have mixed emotions here.

Maybe I should remind you that exploring your limits regarding shot energy is dangerous. It WILL lead to using stronger and stronger bands, often in combination with huge ammo.

Most "power hunter" people I met kept increasing band and ammo weight until one day the dreadful RTS shot happened. That is very very scary, because it is totally obvious that if it hits you on the head you will be very severely injured and most likely die. Even super talented people like Tobias stopped the power hunting after one more RTS shot.

If someone wants to go that road, the band and ammo weights need to be increased very carefully. If you go too fast, you WILL lose control about the weapon at some point, and then the dreaded RTS is only a question of time.

Starships are much more safe in that regard, mostly because if held sideways (gangsta style), the RTS will go far off to your left (the side that holds the slingshot). It also helps using weaker bands and still offers power. But still it is dangerous.

I am not sure if we should really encourage the general community to max out the power. It is a fun thing for the strong and well practiced, but surely it isn't for the average leisure time shooter.

I won't censor this thread of course, but please act responsibly.
