Default PVC bows

While looking up stuff about slingshots and archery I kept coming across people linking to videos of a guy making bows out of PVC pipe. I kept ignoring it because I thought they must be crap. But I finally gave it an gave them a look. Iím really impressed and not only that but it seems like the sorta project I could do. Both my girlfriend and I are really excited about trying to make one.

Has anyone here given it a shot? Any tips or advice thatís not mentioned in the instructional videos?

Must be The Backyard Bowyer. He seems a lil' goofy, but makes really legitimate bows and has some nice bow ring designs.
Easy to follow too.

Thatís really cool! I made one a while back and can share a little knowledge. First is to make a proper jig. I tried screwing a few pieces of PVC if the same diameter of the bow to a board. It worked poorly because the screws poked out a little so the taper wasnít as good as it couldíve been. Also I did it when it was like 25į outside which made it considerably harder. Try and do it on a nice day if you can. Hereís a picture:

I know that's sideways but I can't figure out how to fix it. I used the following tutorial to make that:

So I messed up in more than one way. The first is the length of the bow itself. I have freaky long monkey arms, so I wish I would've made the bow limbs about 3 or 4 inches longer per limb. I was getting really bad stacking at the end of my draw. Also there is waaay too much recurve in the tips there. I think the length of the recurve is about right but I should've used a bigger diameter pan. I didn't see it when I made it, but the limbs very obviously bend only at the base there. That did lead to a collapse on the top limb after about 150 shots. I think the easiest remedy would've been to add some good deflex to the limbs and make that taper a bit better. The only other thing I really messed up on was my arrows. Be sure and get some good arrows. I was using an unfletched fishing arrow with a diy nock which was a huge mistake. You may want to consider doing a centershot bow - I certainly will when I try it again. Here's his tutorial for that:

Please post pics of your results! I'm really curious to see what you find out! Good luck!
